Additional to the MRCSA specialist services to young people, a number of youth leadership initiatives are conducted through the refugee youth network. These initiatives support leadership training for young people of new and emerging communities, assist their participation in advocacy and engagement with the broader youth sector and support them to develop arts activities and enter into mainstream sport.

Youth Reference Group & Young Women’s Action Group
These groups comprise young people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds who with the support of the MRCSA are involved in developing and driving its Youth Program. These young people, many of who are nominated by their communities, provide advice to the MRCSA Board on youth issues and also encourage the participation of other young people from their communities with the various MRCSA and broader youth programs and activities.

Youth Parliament Program
Over the years, the MRCSA has nominated and supported young people of refugee background to participate in the SA Government’s Youth Parliament Program which educates young people about the SA Parliamentary system, voting procedures, parliamentary etiquette, public speaking and bill writing in a professional and exciting environment.

Sports Subsidy Program
This program supports young people who would otherwise be unable to do so, to participate in mainstream sports and active recreation. The subsidy, provided to eligible applicants between the ages of 10-25 years, enables them to purchase clothing and sporting equipment, register with sports clubs and organise team events.
